The Department of Mathematics and Statistics next entry point for ALL graduate programs (both M.Sc. and Ph.D.) is September 2010.

The deadline for submission of applications is February 1, 2010.  However, applications may be considered at any time.  Please contact the Graduate Secretary, Susan McCormick at smccormi at uoguelph dot ca, before proceeding with your application.  You must apply online at the following website:

Math Package Aids Transition for First-Year Students

A study aid developed by University of Guelph math professors is helping first-year students overcome math anxiety and sharpen numeracy skills before they enter a university classroom.
The Mathematics Post-Secondary Preparedness Package (MP^3) helps students "clear the math mental cobwebs," said Prof. Jack Weiner, who co-authored the package with Prof. Hosh Pesotan. Weiner said the package was created in response to the all-too-common – but untrue – lament heard on university and college campuses that “kids these days just don’t know their math.”

U of G Prof Modelling Spread of H1N1 Flu Virus

A University of Guelph mathematics professor is developing a model to predict the spread of the H1N1 flu virus and guide public health strategies to combat a potential pandemic.
 Prof. Chris Bauch is one of a handful of researchers in Ontario who were approached last fall by the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion (OAHPP) to create mathematical models to help with the province's pandemic preparedness planning. In recent weeks, they've stepped up the collaborative effort to focus on the transmission of H1N1 in order to predict the spread of the disease.

Prof Monica Cojocaru Wins Fulbright Chair to Study 'Green' Motives

Why do consumers choose or reject green products and how can businesses and governments use policies and incentives to help shape those choices? Those are the questions that a University of Guelph mathematician will study under a new Canada-U.S. Fulbright Visiting Research Chair.


Prof. Monica Cojocaru, Mathematics and Statistics, is Guelph's first current faculty member to visit an American institution under the prestigious award, announced this month. Long regarded as the world's premier academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program involves exceptional scholars from more than 150 countries worldwide.

CFI Invests in U of G Research - Paul McNicholas Among Recipients

Prof. Paul McNicholas, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, has received $118,362 to develop new model-based clustering techniques to enable statistical research involving parallel processing and very large data sets. The applications will be in bioinformatics and food authenticity.

The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) was at the University of Guelph today, announcing that it's investing more than $26 million in revolutionary research at 29 Canadian universities. U of G received more than $1.1 million for six projects ranging from biomaterials to childhood injury prevention.
