Graduate Studies

The University of Guelph is a research intensive university with 18,000 students, including 2,000 graduate students. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers the graduate degrees:

  • M.Sc Mathematics (thesis or project)
  • M.Sc. Statistics (thesis or project)
  • Ph.D Mathematics (specialization in Applied Math)
  • Ph.D Statistics (specialization in Applied Statistics)

in a medium sized graduate program with currently about 50 students and 24 graduate faculty advisors. Moreover, a number of Faculty participate in the interdepartmental, interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biophysics

Recently the Department has become home to a Canada Research Chair, a Bioinformatics Research Chair, and a SHARCNET Research Chair and has attracted an increasing research portfolio from a variety of funding agencies. These include the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), the Ontario Ministy of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation (MRI), National Centres of Excellence (NCE) and the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). The Department has also attracted funding from industry and recent faculty awards include two Early Researcher Awards and a Canada-US Fulbright Chair. Our graduate students actively participate in these dynamically evolving research programs. We cover a variety of mathematical and statistical areas, many of them with a unique focus on applied aspects of the disciplines.
