Applied Mathematics and Statistics
Environmetrics (last admission Fall 2009)
In our changing world, new careers requiring higher levels of mathematics have emerged. Advances in mathematics and statistics, with innovative use of computers, make it possible to investigate increasingly complex problems in biotechnology, data communications, environmental toxicology, and many more topics. Mathematics and Statistics lies at the heart of much research in many scientific disciplines.

The co-op program in Applied Math & Stats enabled me to apply concepts learned in the classroom to various work situations. I thoroughly enjoyed studying Math at Guelph. I appreciated the smaller class sizes and found that all of my professors were very approachable and supportive. I feel that the transferable skills gained through co-op along with my math skills contributed directly to acquiring my current job at Waterloo Maple. - Heather Bowman, B.Sc., Applied Mathematics and Statistics, 2001 |

The co-op experience allows you to test the waters to see what careers are available in the field. I had the opportunity to work in both the public and private sectors and both were great experiences. Many of the skills you learn on the job will help you in the next semesters at school. I am now working in a genomics lab at the Banting and Best Department of Medical Research at the University of Toronto. It is a really hot area! I encourage math and stats students to diversify, take mathematics, statistics, and computer science combined with a little biology. They can't get enough of us "bioinformaticians" right now! - Mark Robinson, B.Sc., Applied Mathematics and Statistics, 2001 |

Summer Research Assistantship students Sally Murdock (left) and Savannah Gomes worked with supervising professor Herb Kunze in 2001, with each student submitting a research paper to a peer-reviewed journal. Sally and Savannah constructed the following list of reasons to study mathematics and statistics at the University of Guelph. |
What do Mathematics & Statistics graduates do?
Our graduates find exciting and lucrative careers, often working in teams, doing financial analysis, marketing research, software and hardware design, and medical research, among other areas. Consider this list:
- Model information flow through the internet so that it reaches its destination as quickly as possible
- Develop more efficient financial investment strategies
- Design cancer radiation therapy that destroys a tumor without affecting neighbouring tissue
- Determine risk factors for cardiovascular disease
- Design encryption algorithms that allow one to make secure purchases over the internet
- Design airplane wings that make flight as fuel-efficient as possible
- Design and analyze research studies to develop improved medical procedures
Where else does the study of mathematics and statistics play a role in our society?
Everywhere! ... to help understand the use of both theoretical and practical mathematics and statistics in answering problems such as:
- How does the RCMP store its huge database of fingerprints efficiently?
- How does medical imaging obtain 3D structures from X-rays and CAT scans?
- How was the first breast cancer gene identified?
- Is water in your community safe to drink?
- Are statistics in DNA testing used properly by the courts?
Why study at the University of Guelph?
